Should the government remove tax on tobacco?
Australia has among the world's highest tobacco taxes — a pack costs $50+. The tax raises ~$15B/yr but critics say it punishes working-class Australians who smoke at higher rates. Should it stay, go, or be redirected?
Is "Ditch the Witch" sexist — and should it be allowed?
The background: "Ditch the Witch" was first used in 2011 against Julia Gillard — Australia's first female Prime Minister — at a rally where Tony Abbott spoke without objecting to the signs. Gillard responded with her famous 2012 "misogyny speech" in parliament, which went viral worldwide and is now studied in schools.
Now in June 2026, the same slogan is back — this time aimed at Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. Both Gillard and PM Anthony Albanese have publicly condemned it. The billboards' funder says it is legitimate political protest.
Two real questions here — you decide:
1. Is the language sexist — targeting these women because they are women?
2. Even if it is sexist — should it be allowed in a democracy?
Julia Gillard: "I am saddened to see this tired old trope resurrected."
Franco Puleo (funder): "I disagree it is sexist — it is political protest."
Anthony Albanese: "Completely unacceptable to demean, objectify or belittle women."
