The Albanese Government quietly gutted FOI — without ever asking us
Freedom of Information lets any Australian demand to see government documents — emails, spending records, cabinet notes. No referendum. No election promise. No mandate. Yet FOI requests granted in full collapsed from 59% in 2011–12 to just 21% in 2023–24, and average appeal wait times blew out to 15.5 months. In 2025 the government tried to weaken it further — banning anonymous requests and expanding secrecy exemptions — only backing down in March 2026 when the Senate was about to vote it down.
